Ominous words with which to begin your own blog’s introduction.
Regardless, it’s a good question even if it does set A Tenuous Blog off on its back foot. There are plenty of good photography blogs out there. Take a look at the blogroll here to get an idea of some of the ones I consider worth time away from a camera.
That’s the rub, isn’t it? You’re either sneaking a peek at work or laid-up in bed when you’re here – if not, well you really should be out there photographing something. Shouldn’t you?
So why start a blog myself?
I wish there was one simple reason, but there’s not.
One of the reasons is marketing. It isn’t the only reason so don’t run screaming quite yet – but let’s be honest from the get go about our motivations. One of the reasons I’m blogging is because I’m just starting out in the world of professional photography. I’ve got a small business I’d like to grow, I’d like to gain clients and contracts and support what has been a long running hobby of mine. But there are other, less self-serving reasons as well.
One reason is trying to give back to the photographic community. I’ve seen plenty of Photography Blogs authored by professionals. Most of them give you tips, suggestions, pathways for going pro if you’d like. Most of it is good information. What I haven’t seen is a blog authored by someone just starting out, learning the ropes and making mistakes. Seems I may have found my niche, eh?
I’ve also always loved writing. I’m not as active as I once was with my writing and blogging gives me an opportunity to sit down and write again. If I can link that to my other creative passion, photography well heck, why not.
So this is what I hope A Tenuous Blog will be. A blog where I can talk about my adventures in photography as a small business owner – owner of Tenuous Thread Photography to be exact. I’ll be making mistakes, so you’ll get to see those – lucky you. Hopefully I’ll have successes as well and it would be great if you can learn from them in almost real-time so you don’t need to make them yourself.
A Tenuous Blog is about small business adventure. The emerging photographer business.
Its about finding out whether the sacrifices of becoming a professional photographer are worth it to someone who already has a job he loves.
About balancing the passion I have for photography with the passion I feel for my wife.
About discovering whether going pro is as fun and as liberating as making images for the sheer enjoyment of it can be. Heck, it might not need to be one or the other.
Should be interesting.
Congrats, Alex! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and seeing where this all leads you.
David,
Thanks for the comment. Without your posts in the past week or two I might have given back into resistance. Cheers.
Fantastic! As I started to read some of your posts I must say that I share a lot of your dilemmas facing different shooting situations. Since my hobby is ’slowly’ growing into pro, I quickly realized that photography will be a lifelong learning experience! A bientot!
Thanks Serge – Hopefully this blog will help photographers in the same situations as you and I.
It was nice running into you again this weekend. Cheers.
