Uh – where exactly did 2009 go?

Day, n. A period of twenty-four hours, mostly misspent.

Ok, perhaps not misspent – but certainly not spent on photography.

A Tenuous Blog has been nothing if not neglected during the past 6 months (er, 8 months?!?). I’ve been busy, which is a lame excuse for not keeping up on something that seemed so darn important in the early half of 2009.

So, what’s the plan.

2009 was wonderful in terms of my full-time job. As a result it could safely be said that I did not spend nearly the time on photography I had planned to. 2010, I hope, will rectify that problem.

I need to stop, slow down a little and plan for the future. I did some neat things with photography in the latter half of 2009 and I’ll talk about those and how they affected my outlook on my photography and photography in general.

I’ve also decided to pursue a different tack with The Tenuous Blog.

I had originally intented to blog about the adventures of owning your own small photography business and the ins and outs of concert photography. Well, you can see how that turned out, so 2010 will be a little bit different.

In 2010 I plan to:

  • 1) Take a photograph a day. This is part of a project suggested by Mike Johnston over at The Online Photographer. In short Mike suggested that if someone truly wanted to get better at seeing light and making images that they would spend a year taking pictures with just a manual camera, one lens and black and white film.

I’m going to try with my digital camera, Canon’s nifty 50, and a B&W preset. I did it for 27 days in 2009 and was having fun – hopefully I’ll get a few more months under my belt in 2010.

  • 2) Start blogging about my Meetup.com group. I organize a photography meetup group in the front range region of Colorado. We’re called The Denver Photowalk Meetup Group. We’re a group of photographers in the front range that get together a pre-selected locations and spend a few hours photographing and talking shop. In 2010 we’re looking to have 2 meets a month with at least one “Creativity Workshop” to work on skills and vision development. Members are getting really excited about it and so am I.
  • 3) Part and parcle with #2 above is the need to start using this blog as a way to reach more Meetup members and provide another forum through which our Denver Photowalk Meetup Group can interact and learn. I’m planning to use the Tenuous Blog to provide added content to the photowalk members – we’ve got a range of skill levels and it would be better to cover basics here than in the field.
  • 4) Update the design of my website Tenuous Thread Photography. After working on a purchased framework for my original photography website I decided more and more advanced coding was out of my league. I decided to try Photoshelter and have been really pleased thus far with the results. I feel much more confident about e-commerce side of the site and the SEO integration seems very solid.

I’ve got a few more ideas – but really, I need to stop, stay focused and plan for the future. Thanks for stopping by again – I know it has been awhile.

Cheer,
Alex
