Photographing Pawnee Buttes – a Denver Photowalk Group excursion

Photographing Pawnee Buttes – a Denver Photowalk Group excursion

The lure of early prairie wildflowers and swaying grasses can be a frustrating call however; the buttes are not the easiest of photographic subjects. Despite the challenges the Denver Photowalk Group headed out for a sunset expedition on May 1st and, with a little luck, crafted some wonderful images.

Adding Depth to Your Photographs

Adding Depth to Your Photographs

For example, my local photography group – The Denver Photowalk Group – recently had a creative workshop on adding depth to your images. As I was preparing for the meet I realized that I rarely take advantage of depth in my personal imagery.

Starting again

Starting again

It has been a while since I posted anything here. You may have noticed that my “Photo-a-Day” project fell by the wayside. I’m beginning to climb back on that photographic horse so hopefully the posts will start again with more regularity and more pertinence.

My connection is a little slow today so I’ll cut back on the text. I must say, however, that having your plane de-iced is, shall we say, ineteresting.

Photo-a-Day: Day 51

Well, not exactly the people photography I had in mind but it was a busy night.

Photo-a-Day: Day 50

if this project is about getting more comfortable with photography I also need to get more comfortable photographing people in the “street” setting.

Not much today – just some nighttime trees

Photo-a-Day: Day 48

The American Society of Media Photographers hosted a talk by Boyd Norton this evening at the Denver Press Club. Boyd spoke on conservation photography; his images were wonderful and inspiring. You can find his images here and here. It was a wonderful evening; I met some very interesting people and had a lovely chat with [...]

The ice is melting off of Ferril Lake in Denver’s City Park. With the melt comes the renewed opportunity of shooting reflections.

Today was numbers in the neighborhood.

Today I photographed the tightly wrapped packages with trapped moisture. Doesn’t sound like much, but I think the images are actually quite nice.

Finally got out of the house today and did some shooting. It was tree shadows again (at least with the 50mm);

I love the way the setting sun sets off the textures on old ice. Cheers – Alex

Photo-a-Day: Day 38

I’ve been think of this project for a few years. It all began seeing the shadow of a tree cast against a building’s wall by floodlights. It was eerie and stretched and, well, neat.

Photo-a-Day: Day 37

Today’s theme is scars on wood. I was exploring the way cracks or knot-holes disrupted the “smooth” pattern on the bark.

Here’s the photo for today – enjoy.

Just playing around today; working on some other images that I need to process and print. I’m currently reading “Why People Photograph” by Robert Adams.

I have always enjoyed Botanical images; their mix of formality and abstraction, something readily identifiable but so graphic in nature.

The hunt for “Migration” continues

Closer and closer. I’ve got a few more ideas for my “Migration” images. I’m wondering if adding a stationary object to the image will intensify the feeling of motion I’m after.
